With as much intense sun as Queensland gets, solar panels are an incredibly economical and eco-friendly energy choice. Australia’s Clean Energy Council and the Queensland government’s solar guide make it simple to get started.
If you’ve ever thought about switching to solar, it’s never been easier. Solar panel installation does not have to be complicated– you do not even need to get the local council’s approval!
Why install Solar?
Home solar panels allow homeowners to easily and affordably access renewable energy. Rising energy costs mean that the economic benefits of solar power are becoming more and more obvious every year. While solar does have up-front investment and maintenance costs, these are still lower than most commercial electricity bills. Solar panels have no moving parts and are easy to maintain, and the systems can last 25 years before needing replacement.
Furthermore, you might even earn some money with them. Many energy retailers offer a Feed-in Tariff (FiT). The FiT is the retail rate that you will receive for the electricity generated by your system that is fed back into the grid. Your solar panels can help pay for themselves.
When Do I Need Council Approval to install Solar Panels?
There’s never been a better time to switch over to solar energy for your home or rental property. But many homeowners worry about potential complications. Specifically, what kind of input does your local council have? Could they stop you from installing solar panels? Do they require a building permit?
The answer to these questions, fortunately, is no. You do not need council approval to install solar panels for your home. You do not need a building permit for domestic solar installation. This is because according to amendments to the Building Regulation, all installations of roof-mounted solar photovoltaic panels and solar hot water systems (solar collectors) are self-assessable building work that does not require a permit.
However, that does not mean that it is a good idea to install solar panels on your own! It is very easy for the layperson to incorrectly install their solar panels, which can lead to damage to the panels or the system, damage to your roof, or potentially even damage to you. Fortunately, there is an easy solution: Simply seek out a highly rated, insured solar installer.
Are there Council requirements?
If you plan on installing a large solar system with an output greater than 5kw, you will need to check with your local council and make sure that you are complying with their requirements. However, it is very unlikely that you will be installing anything this large. Most domestic solar panel systems range from 1-4kw.
You will also need council approval and a building permit if you want to put solar panels on a listed building or a commercial building.
